Over 200 people participated in this year’s event where the theme Engaged Learning Inside and Outside the Classroom inspired faculty and staff to present on a variety of topics and issues related to student engagement. Although video recordings rarely capture the energy and enthusiasm of the live event, the Concurrent Sessions and Keynote presentation can be accessed through the links below. Molly Goldstein

Body

Molly Goldstein (Industrial and Enterprise Systems Engineering) describes how deeply engaged her students are in the active learning classrooms she has taught in at the Campus Instructional Facility (CIF). The intentional design of these classrooms creates a very different kind of learning experience as students sit together at tables where they can see and talk to one another while working through complex problems. Learning achievement gains are also higher as students perform better and retain information longer. Active learning classrooms are important for attracting and keeping talented students and faculty at Illinois.

Ben Clegg

Body

Ben Clegg (School of Integrative Biology) describes an A/B investigation in which he taught the same course in two different settings: a large Auditorium and a large IFLEX classroom. IFLEX classrooms have flexible group seating and extensive whiteboards that support collaborative learning, while the auditorium has stationary rows and column seating that make small group work difficult or impossible. Students in the IFLEX section not only exceeded expectations based on predictive data, they outperformed students in the auditorium section.

Reimagining the Classroom Symposium

Body

Created for the Reimagining the Classroom Symposium 2022, this video loop features faculty from across the disciplines sharing their teaching experiences in IFLEX active learning classrooms. Although they teach different subjects, they all agree that students perform better, remember more, and are able to build stronger learning communities in classrooms designed to support small group interactions and collaboration. Active learning classrooms are helping to attract and retain students and faculty, and are an important part of transformative teaching and learning at the University of Illinois.
